Monitoring of water-saving measures through remote sensing in the province of Malaga.

The drought resulting from scarce rainfall affected practically the entire country in the water year 2005-2006. Decree 240/2005, of the 2nd of November, regulates exceptional measures in the face of the drought situation in different municipalities in Malaga (Official Gazette of the Regional Government of Andalucia No. 217/2005, of the 7th of November).

This project fine-tuned tools to monitor water-saving measures both within the territorial scope of the study and in other areas affected by climate change.

In spring-summer 2006, the possibility of using remote sensing in order to obtain support information for restriction compliance control was looked into.

The specific objective of the project was to perform detailed, specific monitoring of the situation of swimming pools (state) and gardens (activity).

Characteristics

  • Methodology to perform detailed, specific monitoring of the restrictive measures applied to swimming pools and gardens in the event of drought.
  • Programming and obtainment of images in Geo Ortho Kit processing mode, which includes the four anti-spectral and the panchromatic band.
  • Image processing by fusion, orthorectification, atmospheric and relative radiometric correction, and mosaicking.
  • Analysis of green urban areas.
  • Statistically representative field work to determine the accuracy of the information obtained.
  • Estimation of water supplies sustained in the calculation of irrigation requirements and laminar evaporation, both calculated through Potential Evapotranspiration-ETo, obtained from meteorological data.
